I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
- Psalm 34:4
Research shows that healing is improved when you have a confidant with whom you can express your deeper feelings. Through Spiritual Services at Community Howard Regional Health System, a chaplain is available to you at any time of need. The chaplain will take the time needed to listen to your concerns regarding feelings, fears, anxieties, guilt and family, while maintaining your confidences. You can trust the chaplain not to disclose the information and concerns you share.
Ministry To Patients
A chaplain will attempt to visit patients within 24 hours of admission and will respond to all urgent calls in order to assess pastoral care needs . With your permission, your minister, priest or rabbi will be contacted. You may send messages through the chaplain to the clergy person or to the office of your church or synagogue. The chaplain will stay with you and your family at times of crisis or until your personal spiritual advisor arrives.
In a spiritual capacity, the chaplain symbolizes God's presence in your life. In addition to offering prayer and Bible readings, chaplains may help arrange communion, baptism, marriage and funeral services.
The chaplain serves as your advocate. When you have immediate needs such as water, restroom, and pain medication, the chaplain will find the appropriate person to help you. Your requests for information about treatment and procedures will be passed on to your nurses. Any grievances you may have will be taken to appropriate staff.
The chaplain can also help you clarify and think through alternatives as they regard issues that affect your spirit and subsequently your body. You will then be referred to persons best suited to assist you with these problems.
As part of the Spiritual Services department's commitment to your wellbeing, a space in the South Lobby of the main hospital has been designated a sanctuary. Please feel free to visit the Sanctuary for your moments of quiet and prayer.
Ministry To Hospital Staff
Both formal and informal spiritual counseling is available to hospital staff. In addition, a chaplain is involved in treatment planning with the healthcare team, promoting staff cooperation and mutual understanding to the benefit of all patients.
