Your life could depend upon detecting breast
cancer early. While women do not die directly from cancer in the breast,
they do die from undetected breast cancer that has spread to other parts
of the body. With early detection and today's medical knowledge,
nearly 90% of these precious lives can be saved. One out of every
eight women are affected by breast cancer, yet only one-third of the women
who should receive a mammogram annually actually do.
A mammogram is an X-ray picture of the breast. A
machine designed especially for breast examinations is used, and the
radiation is about the same amount as that used for a dental X-ray.
Mammography can locate a breast lump smaller than a pea one that might not
be felt on physical exam for as long as seven years. It is considered the
best method for early detection of breast cancer.
