Breast Screening Program

Women do not die from breast cancer. They die from undetected breast cancer that has spread to other areas of the body. In this way, breast cancer steals the lives of thousands of mothers, wives and career women each year. With early detection and today's medical knowledge, greater than 90% of these lives can be saved.

Self Examination

While regular breast examination by your doctor is extremely important, self-examination should be a part of every woman's personal at home health care. The Woman's Center offers free, private self-examination instruction to each woman who makes an appointment for breast screening.

Mammography
A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that can locate a breast lump smaller than a pea… one that cannot be felt by hand for as long as seven years. It is considered the best method for early detection of breast cancer.  The R2 ImageChecker used by our radiologists enhances the ability to detect breast cancer. All of our Radiologic Technologists are certified in mammography through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (A.R.R.T.)(M).

Ultrasound
Breast ultrasound uses sound waves to create a detailed picture of the breast. By itself, ultrasound is not considered a screening procedure, but it may be requested by your doctor or recommended by the radiologist who reviews your mammogram. It tells your physician more about the nature of any lumps and can help rule out the need for surgery. Ultrasound is painless and there are no known health hazards. It is particularly helpful in the evaluation of women who are young, pregnant, small breasted or have a history of cysts.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy

As an alternative to surgical procedures for diagnosing breast cancer, stereotactic core biopsy is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure performed by a medical doctor specializing in radiology. It is accurate, fast and less painful than surgical biopsy.

Free Mammography Program?
A free mammogram is available for any woman over the age of 35 who has no health insurance or whose insurance deductible is so high that it causes her to be unable to afford a mammogram. If diagnostic symptoms are present, there must be a physicians order for a mammogram. If no symptoms are present, a mammogram may be scheduled without a physicians order, but the client must have a physician to receive the mammogram report.

Educational Resources
Today's woman is more involved than ever in identifying and learning about the health issues that relate to her and her family. To support this need for reliable and current health-related information, The Woman's Center's lending library and resource area make available a wide variety of information for the non-medical reader.

The Woman's Center also offers the opportunity to meet local experts and physicians through educational programs. These include workshops, educational luncheons and support groups. Additionally, First Friday, a monthly lunch hour series is offered free.
